Patios in Cork

A patio lasts when it sits on a firm base with a slight fall away from the house.

How a patio goes down

Most of the work is under the slabs

A patio that sinks, rocks or holds puddles nearly always has a weak base or no fall. These are the stages of a patio that lasts.

    Set out

The size, shape and levels are marked out, with the fall away from the house worked out first.

  2. 02

    Dig out

The ground comes out to the right depth, so the finished patio sits below the damp course of the house.

  3. 03

    Base

Hardcore goes down and is compacted in layers, so there are no soft spots for the slabs to sink into.

  4. 04

    Lay

The slabs are bedded and laid to the levels, with even joints and a steady fall.

  5. 05

    Finish

Joints filled, edges finished and the whole area cleaned down.

How big is your patio?

Put in a rough length and width. You get the area and roughly how many 600 x 600 mm slabs it takes, then send it to John with your quote.

What to think about first

  • SizeA rough length and width is enough to start. The helper above gives the area.
  • What is there nowGrass, soil, an old patio or concrete. Old surfaces have to be lifted and taken away.
  • AccessWhether a small digger or a barrow can get round the side of the house.
  • LevelsA sloped garden may need steps or a retaining edge.
  • PavingThere are many slab types and finishes. Ask John which he recommends for your garden.

How long does a patio take?

It depends on the size, the ground and the weather. Ask John for a time frame.

Which paving should I choose?

There are lots of options, from concrete slabs to natural stone and porcelain, in different sizes and colours. Ask John which he recommends for your garden and how you use it.

Can a new patio go over the old one?

Sometimes, but an old patio has often sunk in places or has no fall. Ask John whether yours needs to come up first.

Where does the soil go?

Digging out leaves soil, turf and sometimes old slabs to take away. Ask John how that is handled when he prices the job.

How much does a patio cost?

It depends on the size, the ground, the access and the paving you choose. See what sets the price of a patio, or send John the measurements and a photo.
